My Top Five Interviews

Last year an editor dubbed one of my interviewees “Mr Dullsville.” Either I’d failed to draw out their most interesting side, or as is often the case with adventurers, they were just a little boring. Over time I’ve refined my questioning and now rather than email I interview over the phone or Skype - although one of my favourite recent ones was conducted entirely over WhatsApp!

Climber and Skier Luke Smithwick and I messaged back and forth over WhatsApp while he was in the Himalaya. Unconventional but it worked. Photo: Luke Smithwick.

Over the past year or so I’ve interviewed polar trekkers, record breaking Himalayan climbers and veteran ultra runners. Here’s a selection of my favourites in no particular order. Some are straight Q and A’s, some more meandering adventure tale. Enjoy.
