Academic Scholarship

Dr Ash Routen is a Research Fellow based at the Diabetes Research Centre at the University of Leicester. Prior to joining Leicester in 2019, he trained in physical activity and public health and held academic roles at Loughborough University and Durham University. He now broadly works in applied public health and medical research.

Ash’s research focuses on ethnicity-based health inequalities, inclusion and diversity in health research, and the health outcomes of under-served populations. He has contributed to national and international work on COVID-19 and long-term conditions, co-authoring research and policy material for organisations such as Health Data Research UK and the South Asian Health Foundation, and contributing to the 2024 UK Chief Medical Officer’s Annual Report.

Beyond his academic research, Ash is involved in wider scholarly and public engagement. He has served on the editorial board of BMC Public Health, contributes to national research groups on Long Covid, and acts as a peer reviewer for major public health journals and funding bodies. He has teaching and supervision experience at undergraduate and doctoral levels.

Ash has published over 70 articles in peer-reviewed scientific publications, and these have collectively been cited over 5,000 times.
